The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to traffic on July 27, 2026 and is the newest of the three Windsor–Detroit crossings. It connects Highway 401 in Windsor (via the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway) directly to I-75 in southwest Detroit, so you never touch a city street on either side. Gordie Howe vs. Ambassador Bridge vs. Tunnel
For most trips the Gordie Howe is now the cheapest crossing for cars (about CAD $8 vs. CAD $14 at the Ambassador Bridge and CAD $8.25 at the Tunnel) and the only one with true highway-to-highway access. It is the obvious choice for Detroit Metro Airport, Ann Arbor, Toledo and anything south or west of downtown Detroit. The Tunnel still wins for downtown-to-downtown trips (Little Caesars Arena, Ford Field, Comerica Park, Greektown) and the Ambassador Bridge remains the direct route for Mexicantown and the I-96 corridor.
Best time to cross the Gordie Howe Bridge
Because the bridge is new, traffic patterns are still settling. Early data shows the same shape as the other crossings: U.S.-bound lines build from 6–9 AM on weekdays and again 3–6 PM; Canada-bound is worst 4–7 PM and after Detroit sporting events. Getting to the Gordie Howe Bridge
From Windsor: follow Highway 401 west to its end; the Herb Gray Parkway feeds straight into the Canadian port of entry and the bridge plaza. From downtown Windsor take E.C. Row Expressway west to the 401/Parkway. From Detroit: I-75 exit at Springwells Street; signage for "Bridge to Canada" begins several exits out. Tolls are paid at the plaza on the side you leave from.
